Apple Donuts with Maple Caramel Glaze

Autumn flavors are the best flavors

These apple donuts with maple caramel glaze are the essence of early fall. To be clear, autumn is my absolute favorite time of year. Everything good happens in autumn, and as soon as September rolls around I am counting the seconds until October hits. I'm just a cold weather kind of person. That's why I'm so excited that I'm actually finally blogging this fall! My favorite flavors are in season and I'm obsessed with testing out new things.

Caramel apple inspired donuts

One of the best fall treats is caramel apples. They're y'know, technically healthy... under all of that delicious sugar. They taste like buttoning your coat up and taking a morning walk through a fall fair. So, I tried to turn that feeling into a baked donut. That's how these apple donuts with maple caramel glaze came to be.

RECIPE FOR Apple Donuts
with Maple Caramel Glaze

Spicy Apple Donut Recipe
A caramel apple inspired donut.
Ingredients
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 6 tbsp whole milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 apple, peeled, grated
  • Instructions
    1. Preheat oven to 350ºF. 2. Grease your donut pan and set aside. 3. Whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon and nutmeg. 4. In a separate bowl, whisk milk, eggs, melted butter, vanilla. 5. Add grated apple by hand, squeezing any excess juice into a separate cup. 6. Combine wet and dry ingredients until just combined – do not overmix. 7. Spoon batter into donut pan until about 3/4 full. 8. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Maple Caramel Glaze
A maple caramel glaze recipe for spicy apple donuts.
Ingredients
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tbsp dark brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 3/4 cup confectioner's sugar, sifted
  • Instructions
    1. Heat butter, salt and brown sugars in a sauce pan over medium heat. 2. Continue to stir until butter and sugars are well mixed. 3. Once they are melted together, add heavy whipping cream and mix. 4. Add in confectioner's sugar in parts. 5. When all ingredients are well blended, remove from heat. 6. Carefully dip the top of the cooled donuts into the hot caramel. Use a chopstick or the end of a utensil to remove. 7. Cool donuts on a cooling rack with a pan or parchment underneath to catch drippings. 8. Add any toppings you may like while the caramel is still warm. 9. Allow to cool before eating.
