Make Meaningful Connections with Couples as a Wedding Vendor

Making meaningful connections with your couples as a wedding vendor is key to securing their business, and more importantly, building lasting relationships. Here are four tips to help you make the most of your interactions with couples.

Get to know them as people, not just customers.

It can be easy to get caught up in the business side of things when interacting with couples, but remember that they are people first and foremost. Take the time to learn about their lives, their love story, and what they want out of their wedding day. Your genuine interest in them will show through, helping to build rapport.

Make suggestions, not demands.

When giving advice or making suggestions, always do so in a way that puts the couple in control. For example, rather than saying "You should do this," try "Do you think this might be something you'd like to consider?" This approach will make them feel more listened to and respected.

Stay positive.

No matter how difficult a client may be, it's important to stay positive. Negative things can slip out from time to time, but if you stay on the path of positivity during your interactions with them, that will shine through in the quality of service you provide. Also, try not to take constructive criticism personally. No wedding vendor is perfect, and if a client is giving you negative feedback, it's likely because they're excited and passionate about their wedding.

Don't just ask "How can I help you with [blank]?"

It may seem like a more efficient way to get couples what they need, but the phrase comes across as inauthentic and gimmicky. Instead, show off your expertise with detailed answers to their wedding day questions. You'll come across as knowledgeable and trustworthy, giving them the confidence they need to book you.

Don't be afraid to show enthusiasm.

It may seem like a no-brainer, but showing excitement when couples share positive news about their wedding day plans will make an impression on them. They'll remember how excited you were when they announced their engagement or when they booked your services.

Be clear about your availability.

It's important to be transparent with your availability when you're starting conversations with couples, especially if you book quickly or prefer to build rapport before diving into business talk. Setting up expectations will help prevent problems in the long run, and it will give you more opportunities to take on weddings that fit within your schedule.

Maintain integrity.

Don't go back on your word or promise things that you can't deliver just because it'll result in securing the sale. Doing so will hurt your reputation, turning away future business. If you don't know how to do something or can't give a couple an answer right away, let them know that you'll get back to them as soon as possible with an answer.

Be flexible and accommodating.

A little bit of flexibility goes a long way when dealing with couples. Being able to work with their schedule, dietary restrictions, and budget will make them appreciate you more. If something comes up and you can't accommodate them, let them know as soon as possible. Honesty is always the best policy.

Follow up after the wedding.

Make sure to follow up with couples after their wedding day to ensure that they were 100% satisfied with the service you provided. A good time to do this is in a couple of weeks or months after their wedding date. You can also ask if they have any friends who are getting married and would be needing your services soon!

Building meaningful relationships with your couples is key to a successful business. By following these tips, you'll be on your way to forging strong connections that will result in repeat business and referrals.
